Animal law is expanding at a remarkable rate and is recognized as a cutting-edge and important field.

What is “animal law”? It is a rich and expansive area of law that addresses common law, statutory, and policy issues relating to the rights and interests of non-human animals. It intersects with an array of traditional areas of law, including: administrative, contract, constitutional, criminal, environmental, family, property, torts, and more.

The Center for Animal Law Studies (CALS) at Lewis & Clark Law School was founded in 2008 and is world-renowned for its robust animal law curriculum and as a leader in the field. Lewis & Clark Law School has long been a pioneer of animal law education dating back to 1992. It is home to the first legal journal devoted exclusively to animal law, the first student animal law organization, the world’s longest-running animal law conference, and the world’s first Dean of Animal Law.

CALS is proud to have as part of its team Professor of Practice, Joyce Tischler, who is one of the founders of the field of animal law over forty years ago. Given her pivotal role in launching the field, Professor Tischler is affectionately referred to as “the Mother of Animal Law.” Also part of the team is CALS Founder and Professor Pamela Frasch, who wrote the first ever casebook in the field—Animal Law Cases & Materials—now in its Sixth Edition. Professors Tischler and Frasch are among the experienced faculty who have been instrumental to development of the field and teach in CALS Animal Law Program.

Specializing in animal law at CALS—whether as a lawyer or non-lawyer— provides access to leaders in the field, course content across a spectrum of animal protection issues, as well as networking and academic opportunities that are unparalleled at any other program.

The Animal Law LLM and MSL degrees are offered both in-person on the Lewis & Clark Law School campus in Portland, Oregon, as well as online via a fully asynchronous format.
